Flute solo, piano and snare drum - unknown, Irish 13016. This is a medley recorded by flute player John McKenna in 1925, and also recorded in recent times on LPs by McKenna fans Frankie Gavin and Marcas O'Murchu. Higgins was from Ballinomore, Co. Leitrim, where McKenna was and is very much held in respect. These hornpipes are better known as the Minstrel's Fancy and the Greencastle. The bass and drums backing is unique and a very light, pleasant sound. Irish was a subsidiary of a New York label, Celtic, which recorded many sides of Irish and Cape Breton Scottish music in the 50s and 60s.
